<h3>🌍 Our Community</h3>
<p>BookWyrm at Keyboard Vagabond is administered by the Keyboard Vagabond team, who can be reached at <strong>sysadmin@mail.keyboardvagabond.com</strong> or via direct message to community moderators.</p>
<p>This code of conduct applies to all BookWyrm spaces at bookwyrm.keyboardvagabond.com, including public posts, private messages, book reviews, reading lists, and all community interactions, both online and at any affiliated offline events.</p>
<p>Anyone who violates this code of conduct may be warned, suspended, or permanently expelled from these spaces at the discretion of the administrators.</p>
<h3>🚫 Types of Harassment We Do Not Tolerate</h3>
<p><strong>Identity-Based Harassment:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, nationality, immigration status, religion, or other identity markers</li>
<li>This explicitly includes anti-Indigenous/Native discrimination and anti-Blackness</li>
<li>Deliberate misgendering or use of "dead" or rejected names</li>
<li>Cultural stereotyping or prejudice against travelers, nomads, or people from specific countries/regions</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Personal Harassment:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Unwelcome comments regarding lifestyle choices, including nomadism, travel styles, reading preferences, work arrangements, health, or personal circumstances</li>
<li>Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following</li>
<li>Threats of violence or incitement of violence towards any individual</li>
<li>Sustained disruption of book discussions or community conversations</li>
<li>Pattern of inappropriate social contact or continued communication after requests to cease</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Sexual Harassment:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Gratuitous or off-topic sexual content in book reviews, discussions, or community spaces</li>
<li>Unwelcome sexual attention or advances</li>
<li>Sexual content involving minors in any form</li>
<li>Sharing of non-consensual intimate content</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Privacy Violations:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Deliberate "outing" of any aspect of identity without consent, except as necessary to protect vulnerable community members</li>
<li>Sharing private communications without permission</li>
<li>Doxxing or sharing personal information (locations, real names, contact details) without explicit consent</li>
<li>This is especially important for nomads who may have safety concerns about location sharing</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Other Harmful Behavior:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Microaggressions, including everyday jokes, put-downs, and insults targeting marginalized groups</li>
<li>Bad faith arguments, trolling, or inflammatory content designed to provoke</li>
<li>Jokes that resemble harassment, including "ironic" racism, sexism, or other forms of discrimination</li>
<li>Spam, excessive self-promotion, or commercial content unrelated to books and reading</li>
</ul>
<h3>✅ What We DO Support</h3>
<p><strong>The administrators will not act on complaints regarding:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>"Reverse"-isms, including "reverse racism," "reverse sexism," and "cisphobia"</li>
<li>Reasonable communication of boundaries, such as "leave me alone," "I'm not interested in this discussion," or "please respect my privacy"</li>
<li>Communicating in a "tone" someone doesn't find congenial, provided it remains respectful</li>
<li>Constructive criticism of books, authors, or reading practices when expressed respectfully</li>
<li>Criticism of discriminatory, oppressive, or harmful behavior or assumptions</li>
</ul>
<h3>📖 Book Community Standards</h3>
<p><strong>Reading Discussions:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Respect diverse reading preferences - not everyone enjoys the same genres, authors, or reading formats</li>
<li>Use content warnings for books containing sensitive material (violence, trauma, etc.)</li>
<li>Avoid spoilers in public discussions without clear spoiler warnings</li>
<li>Respect different perspectives on books while keeping discussions civil</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Travel & Nomad Reading:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Share book recommendations for different travel styles and destinations</li>
<li>Discuss digital vs. physical books for nomadic lifestyles respectfully</li>
<li>Welcome readers from all backgrounds and travel experiences</li>
<li>Avoid gatekeeping about "real" nomadism or travel experiences</li>
</ul>
<h3>📞 Reporting</h3>
<p>If you are being harassed, notice someone else being harassed, or have concerns about community behavior:</p>
<ul>

<li><strong>Direct Message:</strong> Contact community moderators via BookWyrm private message</li>
<li><strong>Report Function:</strong> Use BookWyrm's built-in reporting tools</li>

<p>When reporting, please include:</p>

<li>Specific examples of the problematic behavior</li>
<li>Links to posts, reviews, or messages when applicable</li>
<li>Context about the situation</li>
<li>Any steps you've already taken (blocking, asking them to stop, etc.)</li>

<p>We typically respond to reports within 24 hours. The admin team reserves the right to exclude people based on behavior both within BookWyrm spaces and in the broader nomad/travel community when it affects community safety.</p>
<p>We will not name harassment victims without their explicit consent.</p>
<h3>⚖️ Consequences</h3>
<p>Community members asked to stop harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.</p>
<p>If someone engages in harassing behavior, administrators may take action including:</p>
<ul>
<li>Warning the individual privately</li>
<li>Temporary suspension from posting or community participation</li>
<li>Removal of specific content (posts, reviews, comments)</li>
<li>Permanent expulsion from BookWyrm at Keyboard Vagabond</li>
<li>Reporting to other federated instances when appropriate</li>
<li>In severe cases, identification of the harasser to other community members or the broader fediverse</li>

<h3>🔄 Updates & Feedback</h3>
<p>This Code of Conduct may be updated periodically to better serve our community. Updates will be announced via:</p>

provides Mastodon social media accounts to the nomading community (“you”).
For the purpose of connecting and interacting with other Mastodon or
Fediverse accounts, mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com processes personal data
from its users and users of other instances with whom they interact. This
data protection notice describes what kind of personal data we process and
on what legal basis, how long we keep it and why, as well as your rights
with respect to your data.</p>

<p>We dedicate our Mastodon instance mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com to the
nomading community. Our small team in provides the non-profit <a
href="N/A" target="_blank">donation-based</a> service on a voluntary
basis to offer privacy-friendly micro-blogging accounts that our users
typically employ for networking, socialising and discussing ideas mainly
linked to travel and nomading.</p>
<p>For the purpose of ensuring a secure interaction, the website of
mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com stores the cookie ‘_mastodon_session’ with an
identifier in the browser of registered and unregistered website visitors
until they close their browser. For registered website visitors, the cookie
‘_session_id’ stores their login status until logout. Based on user consent,
the website stores as well push notification settings in the browser. For
security and debugging purposes, our server logs and stores visitor IP
addresses for a maximum of 14 days. After that time, all IP addresses are
removed.</p>
<p>mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com processes profile data in the form of posts
(toots), subscriptions (following), subscribers (follower), content
appreciations (likes) and promotions (boosts) for publication in the context
of profile and post pages. For registered users we process your profile data
to deliver the service. For users of other instances, we store and display
public profile data and rely here on our legitimate interest until they
object and in any case when they delete their post or other data
(unsubscribe, unlike, unboost).</p>
<p>If you contact mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com via email or a (private) post,
we use any personal data that your message may contain (such as your email
address or name) only to respond to your message. We archive your message
for at most 12 months. You are of course free to use a nickname and a
pseudonymous email address. We process messages from our registered users to
deliver the service and rely for users of other instances on their consent.
We may also process messages to comply with our legal obligations.</p>

<p>The mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com website and APIs process the IP addresses
and other metadata (as specified below) of its visitors. When accessing the
service, an encrypted connection to its web server is established. To
display the content correctly on the visitor’s computer or other terminal
devices, the following data is processed in accordance with the HTTP and
TCP/IP protocol:</p>

other content on the service. After each page visit, some of the data are
stored in the account profile (if logged in) and server logs. These logs
serve the purpose of maintenance and security of the server and personal
data herein is deleted after 14 days. Furthermore, the website employs the
cookie ‘_session_id’ to store the login status of registered users until
logout or until a year after the last website visit. The website also stores
the notifications settings in the browser. This processing is based on
Article 6 (1) (b) of the GDPR (‘processing is necessary for the performance
of a contract’). This includes processing carried out in order to comply
with the necessary technical and organisational protection measures.</p>
<p><strong>(b) Contributors from third-party services</strong></p>
<p>mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com processes personal data when users of
third-party services with ActivityPub support interact with its accounts. To
enrich public profile pages with profile data, the following data is
processed in accordance with the requirements of the ActivityPub protocol:

<p>Private messages are not end-to-end encrypted and are therefore in principle
accessible to the mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com administrators.</p>
<p>This processing is necessary to provide a federated Mastodon instance and
therefore based on Article 6 (1) (f) GDPR (‘processing is in our legitimate
interest’) with the exception of personal data that is not required such as
the display name and profile picture, the processing of which is based on
Article 6 (1) (a) GDPR (‘consent’). mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com stores
profile data from subscriptions from compatible third-party services until
it receives via that service or directly from the user a request for
deletion or objection (unsubscribe, unlike, unboost).</p><strong>(c)
Registered users</strong>
<p>mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com limits registrations to users it assumes to be
part of the nomading community. mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com reserves the
right to refuse the provision of the service to any given user for any
reason. To set up accounts and manage them subsequently, the following data
from registered users is processed:</p>

<li>Display name, account name, profile picture and header image </li>
<li>Login credentials consisting of an email address </li>
<li>Account description/biography </li>
<li>Content (toots), promoted, and appreciated content </li>
<li>Private messages (sent and received) </li>
<li>Subscriptions and their recent content </li>
<li>Logged-in sessions (terminal software, time and date, IP address) </li>

<p>If registered users post profile data, the previous section applies
accordingly. Note that updating subscribers and posting profile data
(including profile mentions) requires disclosure of personal data to the
service of the recipients. Depending on their Mastodon server’s geographic
location, the disclosure can possibly involve international data transfers
that are outside of mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com’s control.</p>
<p>The registered user’s name and display name, profile picture and header,
description, subscriptions, the own and promoted content, the content of
their subscriptions, as well as their given feedback is published on their
profile page.</p>
<p>This processing is based on Article 6 (1) (b) of the GDPR (‘processing is
necessary for the performance of a contract’) with the exception of personal
data that is not required such as the display name and profile picture, the
processing of which is based on Article 6 (1) (a) GDPR (‘consent’). Profile
data is retained until the account is deleted.</p>
<p>Registered users are responsible for the use of their accounts and their own
compliance with the GDPR as separate controllers when they post personal
data of other people.</p><strong>(d) Contacting us by email</strong>
<p>If you contact mastodon.keyboardvagabond.com via email or a Mastodon private
message, any personal data that your message may contain (such as your email
address or name) will only be used to respond to your message and may be
stored as part of an email archive. You are of course free to use a nickname
and a pseudonymous email address. Such personal data will be deleted after

<p>piefed.keyboardvagabond.com (hereafter "we", "us" or "the service") is a
non-profit <a href="#" target="_blank">donation-based</a> service that
provides piefed social media accounts to the nomad community ("you").
For the purpose of connecting and interacting with other piefed or
Fediverse accounts, piefed.keyboardvagabond.com processes personal data
from its users and users of other instances with whom they interact. This
data protection notice describes what kind of personal data we process and
on what legal basis, how long we keep it and why, as well as your rights
with respect to your data.</p>
<p>Please do not hesitate to <a

email</a> for any question you might have with regard to this
document or the processing of your personal data.</p>
<h3>2. Data protection summary</h3>
<p>We dedicate our piefed instance piefed.keyboardvagabond.com to the
nomad community. Our team provides the non-profit <a
href="#" target="_blank">donation-based</a> service on a voluntary
basis to offer privacy-friendly discussion accounts that our users
typically employ for networking, socialising and discussing ideas mainly
linked to travel and nomading.</p>
<p>For the purpose of ensuring a secure interaction, the website of
piefed.keyboardvagabond.com stores the cookie '_piefed_session' with an
identifier in the browser of registered and unregistered website visitors
until they close their browser. For registered website visitors, the cookie
'_session_id' stores their login status until logout. Based on user consent,
the website stores as well push notification settings in the browser. For
security and debugging purposes, our server logs and stores visitor IP
addresses for a maximum of 14 days. After that time, all IP addresses are
removed.</p>
<p>piefed.keyboardvagabond.com processes profile data in the form of posts,
subscriptions (following), subscribers (follower), content
appreciations (likes) and promotions (boosts) for publication in the context
of profile and post pages. For registered users we process your profile data
to deliver the service. For users of other instances, we store and display
public profile data and rely here on our legitimate interest until they
object and in any case when they delete their post or other data
(unsubscribe, unlike, unboost).</p>
<p>If you contact piefed.keyboardvagabond.com via email or a (private) post,
we use any personal data that your message may contain (such as your email
address or name) only to respond to your message. We archive your message
for at most 12 months. You are of course free to use a nickname and a
pseudonymous email address. We process messages from our registered users to
deliver the service and rely for users of other instances on their consent.
We may also process messages to comply with our legal obligations.</p>
<p>The following information is provided according to Articles 12, 13 and 14 of
the <a
href="http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2016.119.01.0001.01.ENG&toc=OJ:L:2016:119:TOC"

<h3>3. Data protection notice</h3> For the purposes of this notice: <p>
<strong>"User"</strong> means the natural person who interacts with
piefed.keyboardvagabond.com directly via the website or indirectly via
third-party applications compatible with ActivityPub.</p>
<p><strong>"Registered user"</strong> means the users with a
piefed/ActivityPub profile.</p>
<p><strong>"Profile data"</strong> means their posts, subscriptions
(following), subscribers (follower) content appreciations (likes) and
promotions (boosts), bookmarks and profile settings.</p>
<p><strong>"Subscribers"</strong> mean the accounts who follow a registered
user.</p>
<p><strong>"Subscriptions"</strong> mean the accounts followed by a registered

<p><strong>Scope and purpose of the processing</strong> This data protection
notice applies to the processing of personal data for the provision of the
forum service piefed.keyboardvagabond.com. It offers information
on what personal data is processed and how it is processed, and on your data
subject rights.</p>
<p><strong>Responsible for the processing</strong> The data controller is
piefed.keyboardvagabond.com in its capacity as the provider of the
service.</p>
<h4>Processing of personal data</h4>
<p>Personal data processed by piefed.keyboardvagabond.com is accessible to its
administration team and, where necessary, to moderators on a need-to-know
basis to ensure a secure operation. User content is published or delivered
according to the user settings. For the provision of the service,
piefed.keyboardvagabond.com employs the data processors listed below that
process personal data linked to the service solely on the written
instruction from piefed.keyboardvagabond.com:</p>

hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands</a></li>

<li>Email mailbox service for administrative contact: sysadmin@mail.keyboardvagabond.com</li>
<li>Donations processing: (to be configured when donation system is implemented)</li>
</ul>
<h4>(a) Website Visitors</h4>
<p>The piefed.keyboardvagabond.com website and APIs process the IP addresses
and other metadata (as specified below) of its visitors. When accessing the
service, an encrypted connection to its web server is established. To
display the content correctly on the visitor's computer or other terminal
devices, the following data is processed in accordance with the HTTP and
TCP/IP protocol:</p>
<ul>
<li>IP address of the visitor's internet connection</li>
<li>Operating system and operating system version of the visitor's terminal
</li>
<li>Web browser and browser version</li>
<li>Date of access to the website</li>
<li>HTTP cookie '_piefed_session' (for the duration of the website visit)
</li>
</ul>
<p>This is required for the request, processing, and display of profile data and
other content on the service. After each page visit, some of the data are
stored in the account profile (if logged in) and server logs. These logs
serve the purpose of maintenance and security of the server and personal
data herein is deleted after 14 days. Furthermore, the website employs the
cookie '_session_id' to store the login status of registered users until
logout or until a year after the last website visit. The website also stores
the notifications settings in the browser. This processing is based on
Article 6 (1) (b) of the GDPR ('processing is necessary for the performance
of a contract'). This includes processing carried out in order to comply
with the necessary technical and organisational protection measures.</p>
<h4>(b) Contributors from third-party services</h4>
<p>piefed.keyboardvagabond.com processes personal data when users of
third-party services with ActivityPub support interact with its accounts. To
enrich public profile pages with profile data, the following data is
processed in accordance with the requirements of the ActivityPub protocol:
</p>
<ul>
<li>IP address of the third-party service</li>
<li>Name of the user's terminal software</li>
<li>Display name, account name, and profile picture</li>
<li>Current date and time</li>
<li>Profile data</li>
</ul>
<p>Private messages are not end-to-end encrypted and are therefore in principle
accessible to the piefed.keyboardvagabond.com administrators.</p>
<p>This processing is necessary to provide a federated piefed instance and
therefore based on Article 6 (1) (f) GDPR ('processing is in our legitimate
interest') with the exception of personal data that is not required such as
the display name and profile picture, the processing of which is based on
Article 6 (1) (a) GDPR ('consent'). piefed.keyboardvagabond.com stores
profile data from subscriptions from compatible third-party services until
it receives via that service or directly from the user a request for
deletion or objection (unsubscribe, unlike, unboost).</p>
<h4>(c) Registered users</h4>
<p>piefed.keyboardvagabond.com limits registrations to users it assumes to be
part of the nomad community. piefed.keyboardvagabond.com reserves the
right to refuse the provision of the service to any given user for any
reason. To set up accounts and manage them subsequently, the following data
from registered users is processed:</p>
<ul>
<li>Display name, account name, profile picture and header image </li>
<li>Login credentials consisting of an email address </li>
<li>Account description/biography </li>
<li>Content (posts), promoted, and appreciated content </li>
<li>Private messages (sent and received) </li>
<li>Subscriptions and their recent content </li>
<li>Logged-in sessions (terminal software, time and date, IP address) </li>
</ul>
<p>If registered users post profile data, the previous section applies
accordingly. Note that updating subscribers and posting profile data
(including profile mentions) requires disclosure of personal data to the
service of the recipients. Depending on their piefed server's geographic
location, the disclosure can possibly involve international data transfers
that are outside of piefed.keyboardvagabond.com's control.</p>
<p>The registered user's name and display name, profile picture and header,
description, subscriptions, the own and promoted content, the content of
their subscriptions, as well as their given feedback is published on their
profile page.</p>
<p>This processing is based on Article 6 (1) (b) of the GDPR ('processing is
necessary for the performance of a contract') with the exception of personal
data that is not required such as the display name and profile picture, the
processing of which is based on Article 6 (1) (a) GDPR ('consent'). Profile
data is retained until the account is deleted.</p>
<p>Registered users are responsible for the use of their accounts and their own
compliance with the GDPR as separate controllers when they post personal
data of other people.</p>
<h4>(d) Contacting us by email</h4>
<p>If you contact piefed.keyboardvagabond.com via email or a piefed private
message, any personal data that your message may contain (such as your email
address or name) will only be used to respond to your message and may be
stored as part of an email archive. You are of course free to use a nickname
and a pseudonymous email address. Such personal data will be deleted after
12 months.</p>
<h4>Exercise your rights</h4>
<p>You have the right to request from us access to and rectification or erasure
of your personal data or restriction of processing concerning you or, where
applicable, the right to object to processing or the right to data
portability. Where applicable, you also have the right to withdraw your
consent at any time. Please note that withdrawing your consent does not
affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal.

Consider writing your blog in another application copy-pasting the final version so you don't get prematurely submit-happy. </br>

## Federation
You can enable or disable federation for your blog. If you want to guarantee privacy you can leave your blogs in Draft.
You follow blogs, not accounts. If you go to the settings page on your blog, you'll see the handle for it, which you can use to find your blog on the fediverse. Go to your Mastodon account and follow your blog before you publish a post to have them show up on that server.
## Monetization
Monetization is enabled with [Web Monetization](https://webmonetization.org/), but if you're looking to start a business or earn income writing, [Ghost](https://ghost.org) is fantastic and also federates while taking less than other sites.

# Why Keyboard Vagabond?
The reason Keyboard Vagabond exists follows a trend online that is more and more common: people trying to escape the grasp and enshittification of big tech. It started with me leaving Reddit during the API debacle for the fediverse. Soon after I saw that many services became much more blatant about wanting to make me the product of their products. It was something that we always knew, but at least I felt like I was getting more out of it.
In 2023 I decided after living in Austin, TX for four years that it was time to do that thing that had been in the back of my mind for a long time - to sell everything and become a digital nomad. I'm a software developer and a traveler. I already had experience traveling and living out of hostels and I even spent two months in the Netherlands working abroad to see if I'd like to move there one day. It's still on the table. 😉
While I was traveling and navigating the new world of the fediverse, I saw multiple comments about how there isn't a dedicated space for nomads. There are a few communities on Lemmy, but not a real dedicated space. So I thought I'd make one and do it in a way that is related to my job and can put on a resume. So it's kinda over-built for the target audience (I hope) and overcomplicated.
That's why Keyboard Vagabond started existing, to create a space for nomads, but why one should use this instance instead of the bigger ones is a different question.
The answer is that you can use **both**! Federation can be tricky to get the content coming in, because someone has to follow the source. But one nice thing is that different "instances" have different vibes since they have their own communities. So, if you want to see what's going on in the nomad world, you could look at only things created on these individual servers, or "Local" vs all.
I'm hoping to create a place that is refreshing from big tech and full of good resources. It's not like one has to abandon Instagram, but hopefully this space can be an oasis from all of the advertising and attention economy, as that doesn't exist here.
